Double Crochet Scrap Blanket

Can I just tell you that I love Youtube?!?!

For many years I've known how to knit.  My friend, Janna, showed me how and I had a lot of fun making scarves, hats, mittens, and blankets.  There is one problem with knitting…

It's so SLOW!!!

Knitting is beautiful and the finished product is amazing, but I wanted to do something that would produce good results in a shorter period of time.  Crochet, I believed, was the answer.  I had seen many links to really neat projects on Pinterest using crochet and so I just had to learn.

I asked a couple people to show me, but I never brought the supplies or committed time to having them teach me.  So, one day I decided I was just going to give it a go.  I bought some hooks and already had some yarn.  Now all I needed were instructions.

Youtube to the rescue!  I typed in "crochet tutorial" and a list of videos appeared.  I looked at a few before landing on the best one.  Then I watched and tried, and paused and tried, and watched, and paused until…I had a very wobbly, very ugly green scarf.  I hate making throw-away projects but I realized I just needed to practice.

After a couple of years I have been able to hone my skill, and I have made many things for my family or to give away as gifts.  What you see above and below is a double crochet scrap blanket I made recently.  The pattern is extremely simple and I will post it below.

Double Crochet Scrap Blanket

Needed:

crochet hook (any size, but a J-hook will give you a similar look to what is shown)
yarn

Instructions:

Make a chain as long as you desire the length of the blanket to be.  (I often measure the chain, holding loosely, to an existing blanket I want to copy the size of.)

Skipping the first two chains, double crochet in each chain.

At the end of the row, after you have double crocheted in each chain, chain 2.

Turn your work and double crochet in each double crochet from the lower row.

Continue in this way for four or five rows with the same color, depending on how thick you want your stripes.

On your last row, cut the yarn with a 12-inch tail and pull it through the remaining loop.

Weave in and trim loose ends.

Voila!

In no time flat you have a beautiful blanket to share with someone or keep for yourself.

  1. It's beautiful, Jill! I really like the way the colors came together, and it's a great way to use up leftover yarn. I love crochet so much, and there are many wonderful patterns to choose from. But I've always wanted to learn knitting- so I guess I'll have to bring my knitting needles with me next week!
